Someone has to say it (over and over): these are not good places to launch your startup. You must announce your startup where your potential customers are.

Totally agree. Most of these sites are not going to be helpful for a generic startup launch. I run Leanstack.io which is on the list for some reason, but it's definitely not the place to "submit your launching startup."

What about for SEO purposes though? Surely some of these pass pagerank?

Agree to a certain extent...nothing sucks more than zero value traffic.

Meh. Zero traffic feels worse.

Actually not. Better zero traffic which you know you need to deal with right away rather than low-quality traffic that does nothing only raises false hope of success.

Until the few-day novelty of having a high number of visits wears off...and you're left with an insanely high bounce rate, a low conversion rate, and no customer engagement.

Most of these sites I have never heard of.

Someone should make a launching site for new startup launching sites, to make sure that the new startup launching sites are able to get off the ground quickly.

In a few days you'll be able to add http://www.JustGoneLive.com to that list. It'd be live already if I wasn't using it as an excuse to learn Haskell...

There's a github repo for this list! https://github.com/mmccaff/PlacesToPostYourStartup

Pardon my ignorance but what context of startup is acceptable? Apps and services or blogs, forums and other social engagement sites.

I am genuinely curious

Heads-up: You have Hacker News twice on the list.

and crunchbase 3x ;)

And betalist at least 4

Here is the sorted list: http://codepad.org/A3bEpYbX (scroll down). Obviously a huge amount of repetition.

Oh my. That is a healthy sized list. Thanks!

I think spending any time on this sort of thing is next to worthless. You're better off just reaching out to a small handful of actual customers directly with your time.

Nesting of references is getting intense, but see: https://github.com/mmccaff/PlacesToPostYourStartup From multiple previous discussions.

I'll submit a pull request soon for any new ones brought up by this discussion (unless someone beats me)

How about http://kickstarter.com? Most of the list seems to be telling the kind of people who read HN, and not potential customers. Unless we are your potential customers.

Just one odd thing on the page... the bottom offers 30 days of free Ovoice in a manner that suggest it's an offer made for sturtups only, while it is the same for anyone wanting to try their service. Still good (and the product seems nice - like scrum for people being afraid of technical phrases/names), but the wording is a bit misleading.

How much use are these sites though for generating actual user traffic, and in particular conversions?

Not much, unless your target demographic frequently uses one of the listed sites. For a niche market product, you're unlikely to see much benefit by spamming your startup all over these sites.

is there a service that can submit your startup to all these sites?

Where would you announce such a start up?

You could use a VA to do this.

How does submitting your site to these services affect SEO?

I doubt links from any of these sites would be considered bad by the search engines (i.e. you wouldn't get penalized). If the link they provide is rel nofollow, or a 302 redirect - which they often are - they aren't going to help you very much though. Of course you can get indirect benefit if people following these sites decide to link to you from their blog or something. This has happened to me for even a very niche interest website.

It seems to be back already. Cool list!
