Ask HN: How much does licensing approach influence purchase decisions?

Recently I have been really curious how the wider tech community feels about subscription/SaaS models and its impact on software. I recently developed an app which I changed from a subscription model to perpetual licensing as it fit better, and honestly felt better.

How does it influence your purchasing habits, and how many of you feel like it affects what is being made (for better or worse)?

It's a huge factor regarding my own software choices. I think that subscription models for software are terrible for users and lead to worse software, so I avoid them entirely. Note that I don't include paying for ongoing services in that group. SaaS itself doesn't automatically count as "ongoing services" to me, as it is more typically a way to enforce software rentals, which I don't do.

Thanks John, really interesting take - I feel like I gone with the gradual shift over time, and may not have voted with my wallet as strongly.
