The World was what I used in the early 90s in the Boston area. They also started in 1989 and have a nice history writeup here: https://theworld.com/world/about/history/our_version

I had no idea panix was still around, wow. I had a shell account there in 94. Loved their service and PPP access!

(edited: I fused my panix and my nynet past experiences. Deleted that part.)

their front page still lists unix shell access and even national dialup. 36 years on and the product page barely needed to change

Their web site is a museum in its own right. The original web before it all went commercial.
