Should brands interact with Google+ communities?

We're trying to get a feel for how best to engage with Google+ communities. Are there any foreseeable drawbacks to having a brand interact with Google+ communities? The alternative is having team members join communities and act at will. Our intent isn't to create a sales funnel but to show ourselves as thought leaders, interested in the design and development community.
