That is, classical AI has turned into tools to be used by LLMs as the need arises?

So classical AI research is still continuing?

Classical AI conjures up the image of Christopher Bishop[0]. My early introduction to AI.

I suspect the theoretical side of AI is growing more, but likely focused on performance improvements on the transformer. At some point the transformer became a general purpose AI architecture.

But there's people like Yann LeCun that are exploring other architectures.
