Ask HN: How do you choose your AI model?

I am experimenting with models other than Claude or OpenAI, using OpenWebUI connected to openrouter.ai and am overwhelmed by the choices. The descriptions all seem very similar and their relative pricing (even from the same vendor) looks at odds with how they present the capabilities.

Is there a good intro / overview / decision matrix? How do you choose a model?
