Its kinda shame, but I absolutely buy the reasons as to why those won't work for longer periods of time ( maybe short, very tightly defined missions ). FWIW, I really do think it is the likely next step ( augmentation, real time updates, additional viewing modes, targeting help ). All of it can be useful, but it can't be that obtrusive. So right now, it seems like army was a test run for MS.

Soldiers don't use shit. It takes training, preparation, maintenance to use fancy gear. Soldier in theatre are operating on scant sleep, exhaustion, heat etc and have no bandwidth for fussing with tech. Or so my soldier reported from Iraq some years back.
