I'd suggest looking at https://alternativeto.net/software/github/ for a more comprehensive list.

I recommend Codeberg if your project is free, GitLab if you don't mind it being in the US, SourceHut if you believe in paying for products instead of being the product, and Forgejo or Gitea if you'd rather self-host.

+1 for Codeberg. I dual-host, on Github in the US and on Codeberg in the land of the free and home of the brave (if you count Ukraine as part of Europe for the latter).

GotHub is pretty cool, it's from the developers of the Game of Trees project, but git compatible.

Have you heard about FLOSS?

I guess they are aluding to AI training on your data.

Which for some people is fine given your code eventually helps everyone, even though through AI.

I only just agree but a close call. I agree because of the smogasbord (SIC?) of open weights.

No viable alternative for now - I hope some one is building it.
