It's very nice to see this awful behavior highlighted. We're almost at the opposite end of the spectrum since 2005.

"Don't be evil" <-- Early Google

"Do the right thing" <-- Mid 2010

"Make them pay for it (via tracking)" <-- Google are here

"Money by any means" <-- Oracle, patent trolls, etc.

It was pretty worthless for years already compared to when it first became available.

It was only better than Mapquest for a few years anyway, I went back to normal a long time ago.

Google Maps ‘limited view’ now hides reviews

And nothing of value was lost.

Not just reviews, but also pictures and even the opening hours. Also it looks like the map will have less detail (roads, etc.)
