Ask HN: What happened to MMORPGs and internet cafes?

Back around 2002-2010 there where a ton of internet cafes in my eastern European country with a lot of these type of games ( think wow, ncsoft offerings and various other).

Back then we experienced a sense of community through gaming that was somewhat of a lower pace (months grinding to forge a weapon) yet all of this is know gone.

Is the state of gaming today a natural progression and it cannot be any other way?

Internet became a commodity at home. I have spent countless hours in netcafes too, until I got a connection at home.

Regarding the "what happened to games" part - there isn't really a shortage of online multiplayer games... actually one is hardpressed to find a real single player one

Mobile devices and ubiquitous WiFi.

Mobile data.
