It seems that they used CRISPR to make 20 modifications to 14 genes of Grey Wolf DNA to match the major characteristics of dire wold DNA samples from 13K and 72K years ago.

De-extinction is rather a stretch, they are slightly modified modern wolfs, but impressive nontheless.

Nowhere close to getting dinos from frogs (or chickens?) though :)
