Crypto's legacy is the globalization of the black market for consumers.

Thanks to crypto currencies, the average person can use a dark web marketplace with reasonable confidence to order illicit goods from all over the world, when previously they would be too worried about it being a scam or too worried about the transaction being traced by law enforcement.

The actual anonymity of cryptocurrencies is besides the point. What brought dark markets closer to consumers is the idea that it's anonymous and safe, and seeing their peers use them successfully.
