How to type in the terminal with a Gamepad?

On game consoles there’s the way to select letters by arrow keys/cross or click through the alphabet for every position.

Is there a way to code a feature like this for the terminal to use it with just a gamepad (or a few keys)?

It would be a great benefit for linux consoles that have the possibility of a terminal but only a limited amount of keys (buttons).

I thought about it but I couldn’t imagine anything instead of rewriting the command line by coding this functionality and send the „command“ to the command line.
