Ask HN: Gmail Taking 500+MB RAM on macOS with Brave

So, I'm using brave on an m3 mac and having 2 big issues: 1. Brave does not properly use memory saver - I have it set on aggressive and even then tabs like gmail just remain active even if I don't use them in days

2. Especially Gmail tab takes upwards of 500MB - in comparison if I run machine learning models on a moderate sized data set Python ends up taking 1-1.5GB - What is so special that Gmail is doing that it requires so much resources lol

I use Thunderbird to read my GMail accounts. The web browsers take up too much RAM, but I think (I am not 100% certain) that reading IMAP GMAIL in Thunderbird takes up less RAM.

was thinking of trying thunderbird - have you tried apple mail app or superhuman as well by any chance?

I don't have a Mac, what is Superhuman?

an email client that looks nice - apparently quite popular in youtuber land too lol

It cost me too much money to try, I am disabled and on a fixed income. I cannot tell how it would work, but it looks nice.

What about the space the iOS app needs? 2.4 GB on my iPhone vs 54 MB for Tuta…

that's a whole different story too - storage is still manageable but taking up huge chunks of RAM means the daily usage can get affected easily.
