Ask HN: Is Data Annotation a Scam?

I have been bombarded by ads from this company the last couple months. As I recently moved to an IT/ managerial position I do not get to code as much as before, but I would like to, as well as making some money. I am based on Canada, anyone form here with experience on that platform ?

Also any similar options or pt remote coding work, that may work for junior level developers would be appreciated.

Apparently not a scam, but there's an amply supply of reports on Reddit about the shabby treatment of people who have had the misfortune of getting caught up in their opaque and time-consuming selection process (leaving candidates in limbo by not telling them whether they passed the assessment or not, for example; not allowing them to apply to different roles with the same email / phone number; etc).

Meanwhile it's run by a company called Surge AI and you can probably guess how much its principals make.
