TL;DR, Tesla / Musk was successful because they moved to Shanghai. China enabled Tesla to build cars that did not fall apart and that could make a profit. And also, Musk convinced the officials to go green. Interestingly, something called the 'catfish effect': by doing so, he transformed the Chinese car industry to a monster that is about to take over the world.

I might paraphrase here a bit, but this article gives a really nice insight how smart Musk entered that market without becoming yet another Musk cheering monkey story.
