This observation applies to software and frameworks as well. I think this is the secondary draw to FOSS (the first being the price of course). Being able to see the source and fork it if necessary fosters trust. Closed source products only offer brand recognition (kinda like the organic label on produce).

Tune in ..., drop out ... and turn on ...
