From an engineering viewpoint that might work but I would suggest that we lose a lot of nuance because what you cannot express in English will not be expressed
Did they actually test for this, though? It should be possible to find matching idioms in two languages and then ask the LLM to translate the idiom between those languages. It would be good for the claim if it would be unable to perform the task.
