This is astonishing. The near-universal consensus among mathematicians is that the ABC conjecture is still open, and the onus is on the person claiming to have proved it to convince others that the proof is sound.

Many have tried to understand it, and efforts continue, but it remains open.

This is equivalent to people producing a cryptosystem and then offering a cash prize to anyone who breaks it.

Does inter-universal Teichmüller theory have any application outside of this supposed proof of the abc conjecture?

I don't think anyone can tell, because no one seems to understand anything about it.
