As an architect I used grids to help me drawing everythings, a mix of feets and inches, close to the MODULOR "invented" by Le Corbusier, a french architect. You could see here: http://b2b3.free.fr/confs/ , the first conference and maybe the second generalizing grids to curved shapes.
