Taking a step back, I think a larger issue here is that visibility and usability of "side channel" information is about to become much more accessible with these new, powerful outcome oriented information processing techniques such as machine learning and topical data analysis. Information that would have previously been considered noise is quickly becoming interpratable.
Much of the "side channel" is becoming part of the main channel.
