Ask HN: A bookkeeping app worthy of coders?

If you are a coder and run a business, what would make a an accounting software worthy of your respect?

I'm thinking, we're using all these amazing power tools all day that just make one feel like a magician, but when it is time to take care of the books it's like [face screaming in fear emoji]

I am tinkering with the idea of building something in the space so I am curious to hear what hackers desire from their bookkeeping tool belt.

GnuCash is free, open source, and will do whatever you need.

There are a gazillion other options, free and paid; that market is already a "red ocean," so I wouldn't advise jumping into it with your own somehow-better software.

You have a very good point in it being a red ocean. I am trying to see what hackers envision of a much-better software, before I jump in :)

Honest question, do you use GnuCash yourself, or just referring to it? Seems like you like it?
