Lift controllers date from the 1920's. I'd consider them embedded systems.

Where does the "1960" come from? Wikipedia lists August 1966 as when the AGC was introduced.

AGC was preceded by many other digital guidance computers, including those for the Minuteman I, the Minuteman II, and Gemini.

It might depend on your definition of "system". WW II battleships had electro-mechanical computers for fire control.
