Ask HN: What strategies do you employ to get users/visitors?

Hi all - I've recently launched my own startup, and for lack of a product right now (just got the API to build on) I've taken a content-like approach to marketing: blog posts and tweets relevant to my space.

Now that I've begun that practice, I'm curious as to how everyone else here has gone about getting eyeballs on their content/products? Right now most of my visits are family and friends and I'd like to change this.
