This made me think of my late father. He loved interurbans. Interurbans were trolleys that ran between towns. Detroit had a web of them allowing you easy access to the entire metro area.

There is an interurban right of way within a couple of miles of my place. Students at Michigan State could take the interurban out to Lake Lansing northeast of the city. It has been converted to a bike and hiking trail. The fact that potentially they could have had phones aboard would have absolutely delighted Dad.
