Ask HN: Performing Interviews for Intern Positions

I got tagged to perform a few interviews of candidates for intern / co-op positions in an embedded FW group.

So far I've only ever performed interviews for senior positions. I'm concerned my normal questions and conversations won't be appropriate for the candidates and jobs.

The candidates are all still working toward a BS degree in a couple of different computer related degrees. Some have one or two internship experiences, but some are looking for the first time.

Can anyone share any experience and advice for interviewing candidates at this level?

Start with what you want from the interns (honestly).

Cheap labour? New ideas? Cheap labour to throw at new ideas? Your new talent pipeline? Vacation coverage in summer?

Have seen all the above been uses for interns.

That's a good point. It's very much talent pipeline.

I guess that implies trying to get a sense of how what the candidate wants to do long-term aligns with the work we have.
