Dealing with a Bad Manager

Is the best way to get promoted while working under a self absorbed manager is to be so good that it looks bad on them not to recognize you?

A self-absorbed manager will eventually fail to deliver. Build a team, do great work and it will eventually become quite clear that you are the architect of that success.

If you then choose to leave, you will be ready to lead your own team.

I see what you are saying but at high tier companies, everyone is too smart to fail. He is very effective at covering his ass and being consistent to balance out his failures as a manager.

No. They will simply take credit for your accomplishments.

Honestly your best move is always going to be to change jobs.

I know. It's a sad reality. I'm not sure how to break this cycle to be honest. I ended up leaving the company but the whole experience has been hard to move on from. As a problem solver I can't seem to let this go even though there isn't much I can do about it anymore.
