I put the turning point around the 486-DX2, when Intel decided to push clock multipliers as a marketing tactic, instead of putting effort into increasing overall performance via higher actual system bus speeds.

Since then their genius has been bent to PR and the sabotage of competition, rather than the pursuit of improvement. Its really amazing how long they've kept the skin suit patched together.
