Message threading on social media? Twitter vs. FB

Do you think Facebooks private message threading (you generally cannot see all a users reply comments in various threads) is a contributor as to why it grew ultimately so much larger than twitter or Reddit, where generally speaking unless private you can see every reply a user commented on? Dislaimer yes, there are many other reasons but all things even, which concept of message replies is better to you any why?
