Ask HN: Is it safe to let whois protected domains expire?

I have a bunch of whois protected domains on namecheap that I no longer want, so my plan is to just them expire. Is this safe to do or are there some cases where whois info is exposed?

Another question : I want to change the contact info to some fake address to be safe of any leaks, what do you think about this?
