Ask HN: Soundex algorithms for company names?

I'm Looking for papers/research or even just people who have tackled this area before where they have to deal with matching company names. Whilst soundex, and many similar algorithms, are good for human names of varying languages, they're not as useful for company names where numbers might be involved (due to those algo's generally stripping numbers).

if you've worked in this area, what techniques and technologies have you used to help you with this task?
