Did you work part-time during the early days of your startup?

A friend (and colleague) and I are thinking to leave our jobs at a bespoke software consultancy to start a start-up. We're thinking to work part-time for the first year. He's recently married and I have a girlfriend and a flat and stuff. Is this crazy and will it slow us down? Or is this what most people do?
