Ask HN: How does HN get around ambiguous deep-linking laws with newspapers?

I've submitted a HN iOS application that got rejected as posts can link to media outlets such as NYTimes, Reuters etc. After looking into this a bit more, it seems as though newspapers and the media dislike linking to their websites without explicit agreements?
