Ask HN: How much time do you spend reading VS doing/coding?

Lately I have been facing the dilemma of whether I should read a book about a new technology/tool or whether I should just get my hands dirty by playing around with it. I find the former boring, I find the latter exciting but extremely frustrating sometimes. What's you experience? Any tips/advices? Thank you!
