Good Conceptual Books on .NET

Most of the books on .NET / MVC are written in tutorial style. For example Professional ASP.NET MVC 5. They all start with steps you need to do and make you feel like you're doing something. However, it doesn't explain much of the inner workings. Are there any books on .NET MVC that has conceptual depth ?
